About the Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities. It is designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25 yr. regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.

What is the Award?
The Award is a challenging programme of activities that will help you to learn new skills, help others; experience adventure and it will give you a great sense of achievement. What's more many organisations such as employers and universities take a good view of the Award and what it says about the person who has achieved it.

What does it involve?
There are three levels, Bronze/Silver/Gold and for each one you need to complete activities in four different sections - Service/Skills/Physical Recreation and Expeditions.
At Gold level you also take part in a residential project, it's up to you what you do and if you need any help or support the Award leaders are there to help you. It could be something new or an activity that you already enjoy, the good news is that it is not an exam so you can not fail! The Award is about having a go and enjoying yourself, it is NOT a competition.
What will I get out of it?

self belief - self confidence

a sense of identity - independence of thought and action

a sense of responsibility - an awareness of your
potential

new talents and abilities - new friendships

skills including problem solving, presentation and communication

the ability to learn from and give to others in the community

an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses

On successful completion you will be presented with a badge and certificate and at Gold level you are invited to a presentation ceremony at one of the Royal Palaces.

What do I do next?
Telephone or write to the above number/address or pop into your local centre. To enrol you need to buy a record book and for more information you can refer to national leaflets, the handbook or check out the web-site www.theaward.org

The Open Award Centre's are always looking for adult volunteers to help. Whether it's on the committee or at a practical level helping with residentials, supporting young people when making choices and encouraging them when they need a little extra support, so if you have some spare time and could help out please contact your local Award Centre

It's up to you what you do. In each Section there is a wide range of options you can choose from or you can find other similar activities which interest you. This could be something entirely new or you could continue with an activity you already enjoy.

The good news is it's not an exam and you can't fail! The Award is about having a go. It's not a competition - you just need a bit of enterprise and perseverance.

Who is it for?

The Award is open to anyone between the age of 14 and 25 years. Special qualifications are not needed, just willingness to have a go.
